Street Lighting
One of the main sectors in the commercial lighting markets is that of Street lighting.
The highway electrical industry has been developing since the 1870s. The ever increasing popularity of motorised road transport and the need to ensure that roads are safe for the public has encouraged technical developments in the field. The various segments of the market include illuminated equipment, traffic control equipment and communication equipment.
The largest market sector is that of illuminated equipment. This includes street lighting, illuminated bollards and beacons. The value of this sector is estimated to be £280,000,000 per year with over seven million items of illuminated equipment throughout the United Kingdom. Almost 40% is spent on energy and service charges to the public electricity supply company. Of the balance, 70% is spent on maintaining the infrastructure and the remainder on new projects.
Most highway illuminated equipment is owned by local authorities. The map below shows the numbers of lighting units in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The highway electrical infrastructure is in need of constant maintenance. In a survey carried out in 1998 local authorities revealed that there is an urgent need to replace almost 11% of their stock of lighting columns. The estimated cost for this work is in the region of £500 million.
